Things to do at Red Kite Estate

There is plenty to see and do around the Red Kite Estate. We've collected our favourite adventures and activities for you to get inspired for your next holiday

Walk the moors

A pleasant walk with a real purpose is from Red Kite Estate to the local pub, the Red Lion, Llanafan Fawr, reputedly the oldest pub in Powys. The landlord, Alan, has an interesting sense of humour and a good selection of local and guest ales, with good hearty (no nonsense) food.

To walk over the moorland, head left out of the Red Kite Estate wooden gate and keep the woodland parcel on your right. At the end of the woodland, turn right up the pathway to the brow of the hill and down the other side. When you come to the tarmac roadway turn left and walk to the end of the road. When you join the main road, turn to your right and go downhill and uphill until you come to the pub on your right. The local church is opposite with a certified 2,000 year old yew tree in the graveyard. Alan’s jokes are even older! To book a table call him on 01597 860 204.

Dyfi Nature Reserve

Borth, just north of Aberystwyth on Wales’ western shoreline has an amazing beach. Keep heading north along the coastline through Borth itself until you come to the Dyfi National Nature Reserve. Great sand dunes to explore, with beach and water on each side. You can park up on the beach itself (£2 charge) and watch kite surfers and horses alongside ice cream vans and paddling children.

Bridge over the river Thai

Just the Newbridge side of the river at Builth Wells, the Llanelwedd Arms is an old-fashioned Welsh pub with a surprisingly good and authentic range of Thai dishes, together with a decent offering of beers and cider on tap.

Newbridge on Wye Carnival

Every Summer the village puts on a carnival with a crazy flotilla. Tractors, trailers, classic cars and marching bands galore. Well worth seeing. The gala is a great afternoon too.

Pony trekking

If you fancy saddling up and riding out in the beautiful Welsh hills and through the river Wye, try the Lion Royal Pony Trekking just outside Rhayader. All levels of experience are catered for by Alice. Call 01597 810 202 to book.

Elan Valley Reservoirs

There is a series of reservoirs and breathtaking dams, created by the Victorians to feed water to the industrial hub of England in Birmingham, using unimaginable amounts of stone. There is a lovely scenic road that skirts the reservoirs and brings you back into Rhayader.
